About the country

Iraq lies in Western Asia, where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers cut a fertile plain through desert. Mountains rise in the north, and in the south the rivers feed the Ahwar, vast reed marshes listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was ancient Mesopotamia, home to Sumer and Babylon, where cuneiform, one of the earliest writing systems, was pressed into clay tablets. Masgouf, carp split open and grilled beside a fire, is a classic dish.
