Extraverts Say the Darndest Things

Research has suggested for a long time that Extraverts rely on some words more than others. However, the findings have been inconsistent. Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore looked at the subject again, using more than 80,000 participants and their words. The study, published in the Journal of Research in Personality, suggests a small correlation between Extraverts and favored words. They lean a little heavier on positive emotion words (like “happy” and “love”) and social process words (like “chat” and “join”).

And this research likely surprises nobody. But research is often designed to verify what is commonly believed but not necessarily proven. Since Extraverts are often energized by other people, it makes sense that they would use social process words, which describe what they regularly do. In all likelihood, they also share a preference for positive emotion words with Feeling personality types, who probably use both positive and negative emotion words more than others do.

Even so, before those of us who love studying personality types get too excited, the study also finds that the correlates are “small in magnitude.” This means that the words are subtle and not easily noticed in everyday speech, unless the laserlike focus of a research group is looking for them. It’s unlikely that we can utilize word usage alone as an Extravert detector. But there are other ways to spot them in the wild. The finding does, however, reinforce the idea of Extraversion and helps solidify its definition even more.

This makes me wonder what other personality traits could be associated with specific words. With 80,000 subjects, this study may be hard to imitate with every trait, but you can bet we’re thinking of other ways to do it.

i like to expand my vocabulary. if i hear myself using a word too often, i feel its time to expand on the synonyms. but because its easier to find new words online than it is finding expansive phrases, for example "he thought it was okay, so to speak" the 'so to speak' part bears its own meaning, but i am more likely to just add individual new words, its easier to find. in some cases i sound annoyingly formal when i try to speak english, juggling with too many synonyms, but in my mother tongue (danish) i try to sound more down to earth cause its too easy sounding formal in that language with the many long words, you learn early on to avoid doing that all my most used phrases in conversations boils down to a lot of different affirmatives - i like making peoples thoughts and opinions feel appreciated (i can see that, yeah definitely, oh sure, you are right, hmm i did not think of that) etc i make a lot of silly top of the head jokes. ranging from the most casual and easy to go, thats what he/she said, to more situational and complex ones depending on the situation. but its a near always triggering firearm for me that has served me well since i was a baby. i have vivid memories of saying rude things to the neighbors while i was lying in my pram outside and my parents and siblings hushed at me while cracking up, only encouraging me more. i inherited this on spot joking from my mom its also a running joke in my family when some of them expect a reply from me, i stay quiet and then say boo in an anticlimactic way. its generally a running gag in my family to have catchphrases that make no sense or are so weak its what makes them funny. we inherited it from our dad talking to friends online i often end my sentences i could not bother double checking, on related facts, misspells or the real meanings of... with "or whatever its called", "something like that" or "ish". i hate having to look up things like that when i am in a busy stream of typing when i am angry and alone, i spew out words aloud to stress it off, usually involves the devil or "why cant you just work", "work, you piece of -" or "do what i say" to some object, makes me giggle afterwards for how little sense some of the phrases make, commanding around with inanimate objects, when i am done dealing with it i cant really think of anything more specific. i am not a very talkative person, i say what i feel must be said and let it be at that. rarely repeat myself, also because of the vocabulary thing. could be a thing about my type to be as expressive as possible in many varying ways, if and when necessary
