About the country
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, a mostly flat land of pine forests, rivers, and more than 10,000 lakes. Its share of Białowieża Forest, one of the continent’s last primeval woodlands, shelters herds of European bison. Mir Castle and Nesvizh Palace are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the painter Marc Chagall grew up in Vitebsk. Potato pancakes called draniki are a national favorite, and Belarusian factories build some of the world’s largest mining trucks.
