Gandalf: A Calculating Wizard (The Lord of the Rings Personality Series)

Gandalf spends most of The Lord of the Rings being underestimated – by hobbits, by kings, and by a fellow wizard. That happens to a lot of Assertive INTJ personalities.

Key Takeaways

  • Gandalf’s wisdom comes from strategy, not sentiment. He reads situations years ahead of everyone around him, which is the hallmark of an Intuitive, Thinking mind.
  • A commanding presence does not make someone Extraverted. Gandalf leads armies and still spends decades traveling alone, drawing his energy from solitude and study.
  • Impatience is the shadow side of Gandalf’s Thinking trait. He would rather do a job himself than watch someone fumble it, which is why poor Pippin gets shouted at so often.
  • Assertive personalities feel fear and act anyway. Gandalf faces a Balrog on a crumbling bridge without ever pretending the moment is not terrifying.
  • Typing a fictional character is interpretation, not diagnosis. We base these analyses on how a character behaves on the page and on screen, so reasonable readers will disagree.

Editor’s note: We first published this analysis in 2019, and it looks at Gandalf as he appears in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy (2001–2003). Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has since revealed its mysterious Stranger to be a much younger Gandalf, thousands of years before the events discussed here. Our analysis stays with the original books and films.

Gandalf’s Personality Type at a Glance

“I fear I am beyond your comprehension.”

Gandalf the White, The Two Towers

Few characters in literature are as enigmatic and intriguing as Gandalf, first the Gray and then the White, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels. His wisdom and guidance prove invaluable as he leads human, dwarf, elf, and hobbit alike on their journeys through Middle-earth.

A loyal leader, this wizard strives to both protect and push his friends to stand up and fight for what they believe in. He has little patience for those who fail to use logic or common sense (ahem, Pippin) and doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind if he feels it necessary.

“Fool of a Took!”

Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring

Gandalf plays a vital role in saving Middle-earth from certain doom by helping his friends defeat Sauron and destroy the One Ring. Despite being a fierce warrior and a high-minded wizard, Gandalf retains a sense of humanness that is refreshingly comforting.

Some may view him as vain and pretentious, and they are not wrong. These individuals, however, would be remiss if they failed to see that he does express compassion and empathy for others. As an Assertive INTJ (Architect) – Gandalf manifests these traits through a very different filter than his companions with the Feeling trait, who give emotions and harmony more weight when they make decisions.

Gandalf’s Personality Analysis

A fictional wizard is certainly a bit more challenging to type than a human, or even a hobbit. However, Gandalf’s personality is powerfully portrayed through his interactions with others as well as through the skills and abilities that he possesses. Keep reading below to see why we have identified Gandalf as an Assertive INTJ.

Introverted: A Wizard Who Travels Alone

His commanding presence and leadership qualities may lend an Extraverted vibe to Gandalf’s personality – Extraverted personalities gain their energy from other people. That said, the many years he travels alone to research, learning about other regions and races, and his contemplative nature are all key characteristics of an Introverted individual – someone who recharges in solitude instead.

While he is often open to attending celebrations, he finds himself on the sidelines observing (or lighting fireworks), letting the others entertain through song and dance. He is a powerful orator when necessary, yet he truly shines when providing his wisdom through individual conversations with his companions during particularly trying times.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring

Intuitive: Piecing Together the One Ring

His Intuitive personality – drawn to patterns and possibilities more than to concrete detail – is likely, at least partially, a result of Gandalf being an immortal wizard. This trait, combined with the Thinking trait, which puts logic ahead of personal feeling, results in a keen ability to strategize and piece together seemingly unrelated pieces of information into a cohesive plan.

Gandalf, for example, is able to deduce that the ring Bilbo, and subsequently Frodo, possesses is actually the One Ring. He does this by witnessing Bilbo’s behavior and following up on his hunch with years of in-depth research and inquests.

Thinking: Logic, Strategy, and Little Patience

“Gandalf thought of most things; and though he could not do everything, he could do a great deal for friends in a tight corner.”

J.R.R. Tolkien

Skilled at logic and reasoning, Gandalf is an excellent strategist. His intelligence isn’t his only tool, however – his greatest strength is undoubtedly his wisdom. Gandalf has the wisdom to delegate tasks to those who are best fit for them, such as encouraging Aragorn and King Théoden to lead their troops to battle and pushing Frodo to complete his task of destroying the One Ring.

That said, his Thinking trait does manifest in some less-than-compassionate ways as well. He has little patience for anyone who isn’t pulling their weight and is more likely to push them out of the way and do it himself than to tolerate their incompetence. He may be impatient at times, but that doesn’t prevent him from supporting and caring for his friends deeply – in his own way.

Judging: A Mission He Refuses to Abandon

Gandalf exists for a specific reason – to ensure that good overcomes evil for the survival of the people (and elves, hobbits, and dwarves) of Middle-earth. His mission is to assist in the defeat of Sauron, and he literally returns from the dead in order to complete this quest.

Not fire, nor water, nor traitorous wizards, nor orc armies can prevent Gandalf from pushing his companions toward victory. He is wise, stubborn, and never gives up hope. When Denethor gives up on protecting Minas Tirith from Sauron’s army, Gandalf does not hesitate to step in and lead the troops to victory. His ability to take control and restore order to see a task through is just one example of the power of his Judging trait – the drive to plan, decide, and see things finished.

Assertive: Fear Without Hesitation

Not one to question his own knowledge or abilities, Gandalf is undoubtedly a confident, Assertive individual – self-assured and largely untroubled by the self-doubt that his more stress-sensitive Turbulent counterparts carry. Being an immortal wizard with magical powers certainly plays a role in his self-assurance. This does not mean that Gandalf never expresses fear – just that he doesn’t let his fear prevent him from fighting for what he believes in.

“You cannot pass. I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.”

There is only one aspect that makes me question if Gandalf is an INTJ. That is in the books, in the Silmarillen particularly, it is mentioned that Gandalf was a lesser angel and that he learned pity from one of the higher angels. He came to Middle-Earth with pity, not arrogance. In most ways I do see how he is an INTJ, but the "pity" part makes me think his personality would have the "F" in it. What do you all think about this?

Hey, being INTJ doesn't mean you are without emotion or values.

yeah, I get that.

When you logically delve into human behavior, you start to notice that humans act rashly at times and aren’t perfect. Logically, being arrogant would affect how others perceive and stay attentive to you, which might impact the effectiveness of your cause. Instead, looking at them with pity might make you aware of what they are lacking so they can improve. But I think in many ways he could be INFJ too, so good point. INTJ have emotional awareness and values too, it’s not like they’re stone cold, not unless they’re triggered or under serious pressure.

Yeah, it was the pity or mercy that kept him humble and away from the same pitfalls that Saruman fell into. Saruman had pride and that was his downfall. Not to say that INTJ's all will suffer from pride but I'm just thinking of my brother who has this personality also. I'm not much good at getting to which personality a person has.

He could also be a low percent on the thinking meter, so he's mostly balanced.

Hey, like @Zach said, INFJs and INTPs are capable of emotions and pity. My mom is an INTJ, and she cares deeply for things and has pity, inspiring her to help others. Just because other personality types are better known for pity, doesn't mean they are incapable of it. A lot of people think INTPs like me are absent minded, unfocused procrastinator who are always super socially awkward. While I can be very awkward at times, I am also capable of having my ideas being heard, and one of the reasons I write books, FOCUSING while i’m doing it, it to show people that people shouldn't be defined just by labels or stereotypes. Just like being an ENTP doesn't mean you’re argumentative and amazing at debating, Gandalf an INTJ doesn't mean he’s emotionless and without pity.
When reading the Thinking section, the only scene I could imagine was when Gandalf was planning out the order of the dwarves when introducing them to Beorn and he said that Bombur is fattest and counts for two.

He has little patience for those who fail to use logic or common sense (ahem, Pippin). I am trying not to laugh at that.
