“Don’t call me a raccoon!”

Strictly speaking, Rocket isn’t human, but he pretty much has a human personality. As the only surviving member of the Guardians of the Galaxy after the bloodfest that was Avengers: Infinity War, Rocket now finds himself on Earth with what remains of the Avengers. So, we thought we would add Rocket to our Avengers profiles in anticipation of seeing him in Avengers: Endgame. Plus, how often do you get to personality type a raccoon?
In Marvel’s Universe, the Guardians of the Galaxy are the plucky comic relief. The Guardians are a team of random misfits who are so close to being incompetent that it’s a little hard to tell that they aren’t. Included in this team is one scruffy, genetically modified raccoon named Rocket. And if there is a favorite character in the batch, he might be many people’s first choice.
Rocket is brash, single-minded, and outwardly selfish. He’ll steal anything, and he loves danger and adventure. He is seldom concerned with such trivial things as imminent death and destruction. Although he’d never admit it, Rocket had found his place in the universe with the ragtag Guardians team.
Personality Analysis
Of the 16 personality types, we believe Rocket is an Assertive Entrepreneur (ESTP-A). Let’s see why.
Extraverted
Rocket isn’t shy – he thrives on being with others. His default mode is talking his way into and out of everything. Rocket is one of those beings who needs to interact with others to function. Whether he is working with them, against them, or just messing around with them, he needs interaction and an audience. Without this, the whole universe is likely to suffer the consequences of his restless Explorer’s need to do stuff.
Observant
There isn’t much Intuition in Rocket’s world. Life is straightforward: he sees stuff and steals it, messes with it, or modifies it. He has little sense of right and wrong – the world just isn’t that complicated. He can fix a ship or wire it to blow up. It’s all the same in Rocket’s world.
Rocket: Question. What if I see something that I wanna take and it belongs to someone else?
Corpsman Dey: Then you will be arrested.
Rocket: But what if I want it more than the person who has it?
Corpsman Dey: Still illegal.
Rocket: That doesn’t follow. No, I want it more, sir. Do you understand me?
Thinking
Rocket’s Thinking personality trait guides his decisions and actions. Despite his quirks, he is essentially rational. He is a capable engineer, although one with a limited attention span. He builds things, breaks things, takes things apart, and puts things back together. Despite all his genetic modifications, he hasn’t shaken the raccoon-ish need to get into everything. He’s a consummate tinkerer.
The crew often gets to experience the random consequences of his projects. Around Rocket, you never know when things are going to break, blow up, or do something amazing. In the end, his ingenuity can save the day as well as ruin it.
Prospecting
Rocket is literally a prospector. He goes rummaging through everything, finding things he needs, likes, or just feels like taking, and then off he goes to the next thing. If you’re missing something, there is a good chance Rocket has it. No matter how much he denies it, he is a raccoon. Rocket’s unpredictable Prospecting personality trait inevitably gets him into trouble, but then it gets him out of it again.
Rocket: Does anybody have any tape out there? I wanna put some tape over the death button.
Star-Lord: Nobody has any tape!
Rocket: Not a single person has tape?!
Star-Lord: You have priceless batteries and an atomic bomb in your bag. If anyone’s gonna have tape, it’s you!
Assertive
Rocket is Rocket. Despite all his outlandish antics and his own quirky view of the universe, Rocket sometimes seems like one of the saner, more sensible members of the Guardians. He’ll stand up to anyone and will never pass up an opportunity to call people out on their idiocy. Introspection and self-doubt are as alien to him as all the weird people around him.
“Ain’t no thing like me, except me.”
As with many brash and rowdy individuals, Rocket’s over-the-top personality does hide some deep-rooted insecurities and fears. Being the only one of his kind, being unwanted, and being useless and forgotten are all things that weigh on him from time to time. In part, some of his acting up is driven by this – including a tendency to be a little mean sometimes.
This does suggest some Turbulence in his personality. Very few people are 100% Assertive or Turbulent, but here is why we see him as Assertive: Rocket really does embrace his own nature. With all sorts of amazing things out there to go hunt down and steal, he isn’t really driven by a sense of ennui, but by his more dominant self-confidence and mischievous nature.
Whatever loneliness he might feel or resentment he might have toward his creators, he seems to genuinely be enamored with who he is and with following his own path.
Conclusions
“That place is a legend. They make the most powerful, horrific weapons to ever torment the universe. I would very much like to go there, please.”
In the end, we look forward to seeing what Rocket gets up to next and whether the Avengers can keep this Assertive Entrepreneur from inadvertently destroying Earth. One thing we are pretty sure of, though, is that there will never be a dull moment with Rocket around.
