Key Takeaways
- Extraverted, Judging personality types lead nearly every measure of physical fitness. Their goal-oriented, structured approach helps turn fitness intentions into consistent workout routines.
- INFPs and INTPs face the steepest fitness challenges. These two personality types reported the lowest exercise rates, the least fitness interest, and the most trouble finding motivation.
- Lacking motivation to exercise is far more common than lacking fitness goals. Even the personality types that struggle most to feel motivated are more likely than not to be actively working on their fitness.
- ESTPs dominate competitive sports. Their hands-on, action-oriented approach to life makes athletic competition a natural fit.
- Solo exercise is the default, but Introverts take it further. Every personality type preferred exercising alone over exercising with others, with Introverted personalities showing the strongest solo preference.
Exploring the Link Between Personality and Physical Fitness
Physical fitness is something most people say they care about, but translating that interest into action varies widely. Why do some people maintain disciplined workout routines while others struggle to get started? Personality may play a bigger role than many expect. To explore this connection, we created the “Physical Activity” survey, asking people across all personality types about their fitness interest, exercise habits, competitive sports involvement, workout preferences, and motivation levels. Over 10,500 people responded.
The results reveal clear and consistent patterns. Personality types with Extraverted and Judging traits reported the highest levels of fitness interest, exercise frequency, and self-rated fitness. Introverted and Prospecting types, on the other hand, were more likely to struggle with motivation and to exercise less frequently. From daily cardio to competitive sports to the simple question of whether someone exercises at all in a given week, the data shows that personality shapes physical activity in ways that are hard to overlook.
A note on this survey: Our respondents are people who visited our website – not a balanced mix of the wider population. All results are self-reported, and personality is just one of many factors (alongside age, culture, and more) that shape responses. Think of what follows as a starting point for reflection, not a scientific conclusion.
Key Patterns Across Personality Types
The single strongest pattern across this survey is the gap between Extraverted and Introverted personality types. In every area we asked about – fitness interest, weekly exercise, self-rated fitness, competitive sports – Extraverts reported higher engagement. ENTJ personalities (Commanders) exemplified this trend, leading or finishing near the top in virtually every category. At the opposite end, people with the INFP personality type (Mediators) and INTP personalities (Logicians) consistently reported the lowest exercise rates, the least interest in fitness, and the most motivational difficulty.
The Judging vs. Prospecting divide amplified these differences significantly. ESTJ personalities (Executives) and ENFJ personalities (Protagonists) joined ENTJs at the top of many metrics – and all three share the Judging trait, with its emphasis on goal-setting and structured routines. Even among Extraverts, Prospecting types like ENFP personalities (Campaigners) showed noticeably lower activity levels than their Judging counterparts. This suggests that the planning and discipline associated with the Judging trait may be just as important as social energy when it comes to maintaining consistent exercise habits.
Other personality traits played supporting roles. The Thinking trait appeared to give a slight edge in competitive areas like strength training and sports. ESTP personalities (Entrepreneurs) led all 16 types in competitive sports participation, demonstrating that the Observant trait and a hands-on approach to life can produce strong athletic involvement even without the Judging trait’s structural emphasis. At the Role level – Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels, and Explorers alike – the most consistent pattern was that Extraverted members of every Role outpaced their Introverted counterparts.
Perhaps the most thought-provoking pattern cuts across every type: the gap between aspiration and action. Even INFPs – the type with the lowest weekly exercise rate – mostly said they are actively trying to get fitter. For many personality types, the challenge isn’t a lack of caring about fitness – it’s finding an approach to exercise that works with their natural tendencies rather than against them.
Fitness Interest, Exercise Habits, and Self-Rated Fitness Across Personality Types
Certain personality traits – particularly Extraverted and Judging tendencies – are strongly linked to higher fitness interest, more consistent exercise habits, and better self-rated physical fitness. Meanwhile, Introverted and Prospecting types are more likely to report lower engagement across all three areas.
Interest in Physical Fitness
Agreement with "How interested are you in physical fitness?"
| Personality type | Very interested | Moderately interested | Not very interested | Uninterested |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 32.38% | 42.38% | 17.35% | 7.88% |
| INTP (Logician) | 19% | 42.3% | 23.02% | 15.67% |

| ENTP (Debater) | 35.29% | 43.67% | 16.52% | 4.52% |
| INFJ (Advocate) | 31.99% | 46.44% | 17.76% | 3.81% |
| INFP (Mediator) | 20.59% | 45.47% | 23.93% | 10.01% |
| ENFJ (Protagonist) | 52.5% | 37.48% | 9.09% | 0.93% |
| ENFP (Campaigner) | 35.06% | 44.74% | 15.19% | 5.01% |
| ISTJ (Logistician) | 34.34% | 41.48% | 20.05% | 4.12% |
| ISFJ (Defender) | 27.52% | 46.76% | 19.46% | 6.26% |
| ESTJ (Executive) | 55.74% | 31.15% | 9.84% | 3.28% |
| ESFJ (Consul) | 52.15% | 37.42% | 7.36% | 3.07% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 23.7% | 43.11% | 22.96% | 10.22% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 19.06% | 43.53% | 28% | 9.41% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 50% | 34.16% | 11.88% | 3.96% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 39.51% | 42.59% | 12.96% | 4.94% |
ENTJs topped the charts for fitness interest, with 58% saying they are “very interested” in physical fitness. Other Extraverted Judging types – ESTJs, ENFJs, and ESFJ personalities (Consuls) – all surpassed 52% as well. These results suggest that Extraverted types with the Judging trait are especially drawn to physical fitness – perhaps because their goal-oriented, structured approach to life extends naturally to their health and exercise habits.
At the other end of the spectrum, INTPs showed the lowest interest in physical fitness, with only 19% selecting “very interested” and nearly 16% saying they were outright “uninterested.” ISFP personalities (Adventurers) and INFPs showed similarly low enthusiasm. The pattern is clear: Introverted types with the Prospecting trait – who tend to prioritize flexibility and inner exploration over structured routines – reported the least interest in fitness. For these personality types, the appeal of physical fitness may feel less immediate than other pursuits that capture their attention.
Weekly Exercise Frequency
Agreement with "Do you exercise at least once a week?"
| Personality type | Agreement |
|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 76.74% |
| INTP (Logician) | 62.58% |
| ENTJ (Commander) | 91.19% |
| ENTP (Debater) | 79.59% |

| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 65.68% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 61.14% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 80% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 78.88% |
Interest in fitness is one thing, but actually exercising is another – and the data shows that the gap between the most and least active types is substantial. ENTJs led the pack once again, with 91% reporting that they exercise at least once a week. ESTJs, ENFJs, and ESFJs also reported high rates, all above 84%. These types span multiple Roles – Analysts, Diplomats, and Sentinels – but what they share is the combination of the Extraverted and Judging traits, which may drive their consistency in turning fitness goals into reliable workout routines.
INFPs reported the lowest rate of weekly exercise at just 58%, making them the only type where more than four in ten respondents said they don’t exercise weekly. ISFPs, INTPs, and ISTP personalities (Virtuosos) also fell well below average. The roughly 33-percentage-point gap between ENTJs and INFPs is one of the most striking findings in this survey. These lower-exercise types are all Introverted and share the Prospecting trait, which may make them less inclined toward the structured routines that regular exercise demands.
Self-Rated Physical Fitness
Agreement with "How would you rate your physical fitness?"
| Personality type | Very good | Good | Moderate | Poor | Very poor |

How people rate their own physical fitness closely mirrors their exercise habits. ENTJs were the most confident about their fitness, with 71% rating themselves as “good” or “very good.” ESTJs, ESFJs, and ENFJs reported similar levels of confidence, all with clear majorities viewing their fitness positively. These types not only exercise more – they also feel better about their bodies as a result. The connection between consistent effort and positive self-assessment is hard to miss here, particularly among Extraverted Judging types.
INFPs, by contrast, were the most likely to rate their own fitness poorly. Over 36% of INFPs described their fitness as “poor” or “very poor,” and only 27% rated it as “good” or “very good.” INTPs and ISFPs reported similar patterns. For these Introverted, Prospecting personality types – who span the Analyst, Diplomat, and Explorer Roles – lower fitness engagement appears to feed directly into lower self-assessments. Breaking that cycle may require finding an approach to exercise that fits their individual preferences and pace.
Which Personality Types Compete in Sports and Stay Active?
Beyond general fitness interest, our data reveals how personality shapes more specific physical pursuits – from competing in sports to following a structured exercise program to keeping up with regular running or walking. Extraverted types consistently reported higher engagement across all four measures, and the Judging trait was a strong predictor of structured program participation. In competitive sports especially, the differences were dramatic, with some types more than three times as likely as others to take part.
Podium Finishes in Sporting Events
Agreement with "Have you ever been on the podium in any sporting event?"
| Personality type | Agreement |
|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 34.13% |
| INTP (Logician) | 30.36% |
| ENTJ (Commander) | 49.1% |
| ENTP (Debater) | 49.44% |
| INFJ (Advocate) | 33.09% |
| INFP (Mediator) | 29.95% |
| ENFJ (Protagonist) | 47.69% |
| ENFP (Campaigner) | 42.67% |
| ISTJ (Logistician) | 36.16% |
| ISFJ (Defender) | 34.98% |
| ESTJ (Executive) | 47.15% |
| ESFJ (Consul) | 40.49% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 36.15% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 32.63% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 51.24% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 45.96% |
ESTPs were the only type where a majority – 51% – said they have been on the podium at a sporting event. ENTP personalities (Debaters) and ENTJs followed closely, with 49% of each type reporting a podium finish. Every top position was held by an Extraverted type, and those with the Thinking trait showed a slight additional edge. For personality types that thrive on direct competition and bold action, sports podiums appear to be a natural stage.
At the bottom, 30% of INFPs and INTPs said they have earned a spot on a podium, followed by ISFPs and INFJ personalities (Advocates) at 33%. The 21-point gap between ESTPs and INFPs highlights how the divide between Extraverted and Introverted personalities can shape not just exercise habits but competitive outcomes. Introverted types may have fewer opportunities – or simply less motivation – to enter organized competitions, which naturally limits their chances of reaching the podium.
Exercise Program Involvement
Agreement with "Are you currently involved in an exercise program?"
| Personality type | Agreement |
|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 39.29% |
| INTP (Logician) | 26.37% |
| ENTJ (Commander) | 60.62% |
| ENTP (Debater) | 42.79% |
| INFJ (Advocate) | 36.1% |

| ENFJ (Protagonist) | 51.02% |
| ENFP (Campaigner) | 39.7% |
| ISTJ (Logistician) | 36.99% |
| ISFJ (Defender) | 39.69% |
| ESTJ (Executive) | 60.16% |
| ESFJ (Consul) | 46.63% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 29.44% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 26.35% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 47.03% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 37.27% |
ENTJs (61%) and ESTJs (60%) were far more likely than any other type to say they are currently involved in an exercise program. ENFJs (51%) were the only other type to cross the 50% mark. All three share the Judging trait, which is closely linked to goal-setting and structured routines. For these personality types, the discipline of a formal program aligns well with how they tend to approach most areas of life.
INFPs, ISFPs, and INTPs were tied at the bottom, with only 26% of each type currently following a structured exercise program. Even ISTJ personalities (Logisticians), known for their discipline and reliability, came in at only 37%. This 35-point gap between ENTJs and the bottom three types is one of the starkest in the survey, pointing to the Extraverted and Judging traits as key drivers behind whether someone commits to a structured exercise program.
Frequency of Running or Walking Long Distances
Agreement with "About how often do you run or walk more than one mile / kilometer continuously?"
| Personality type | Every day | Once per week | Once per month | Less than once per month |

| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 24.96% | 32.24% | 13.82% | 28.97% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 23.94% | 33.8% | 15.73% | 26.53% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 38.81% | 33.33% | 11.94% | 15.92% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 28.22% | 38.04% | 12.88% | 20.86% |
ESTJs and ENTJs were the most likely to say they run or walk more than a mile continuously every day, with 43% of each type reporting daily activity. ENFJs came in at 41%. The pattern here is familiar: Extraverted, Judging personalities set the pace when it comes to consistent, daily physical activity.
INTPs were the least likely to run or walk this distance daily, with only 22% saying they do so every day – the lowest rate in the survey. ISTPs and ISFPs reported similarly low daily rates. ENFPs showed an interesting split – 33% walk or run daily, but 18% do so less than once per month – possibly reflecting the Prospecting tendency to approach exercise in enthusiastic but inconsistent bursts.
Competitive Sports Participation
Agreement with "Do you currently participate in competitive sports?"
| Personality type | Agreement |
|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 23.74% |
| INTP (Logician) | 19.71% |

| ESFJ (Consul) | 32.72% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 25.44% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 22.54% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 51.24% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 33.74% |
ESTPs stood well above every other type in competitive sports, with 51% saying they currently participate – far ahead of even the second-place ESTJs at 43%. ENTPs and ESFP personalities (Entertainers) also reported notable rates. The Observant trait appears to play a meaningful role here, as types grounded in hands-on, physical engagement seem especially drawn to the immediacy of athletic competition.
INFPs were the least likely to participate in competitive sports, at just 15%, followed by ISFJ personalities (Defenders) and INFJs at 17% each. Even INTJ personalities (Architects), who can be intensely competitive in intellectual pursuits, reported only 24%. The 36-point gap between ESTPs and INFPs is the widest in this group, highlighting that personality shapes not only whether people exercise but whether they choose to compete.
How Often Different Personalities Do Cardio and Strength Training
Cardio and strength training are two pillars of physical fitness, but personality types engage with each at very different rates. Across both forms of exercise, Extraverted Judging types reported the highest frequency, while Introverted Prospecting types were the most likely to say they rarely or never participate. The gaps were especially wide for strength training, where over half of some types said they train less than once per month.
Cardio Frequency
Agreement with "About how often do you do cardio?"

| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 30.35% | 32.34% | 8.46% | 28.86% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 30.43% | 34.78% | 9.32% | 25.47% |
ENTJs reported the most frequent cardio habits, with roughly 77% doing cardio at least once per week – including about 34% who do it every day. ESTJs reported nearly identical rates, and ENFJs weren’t far behind. The pattern is consistent with other sections of this survey: Extraverted, Judging types are the most reliable at sticking to a regular exercise schedule, and cardio is no exception.
INFPs reported the lowest cardio engagement by a notable margin. Over 41% of INFPs said they do cardio less than once per month, and only about 15% do it daily. INTPs and ISFPs showed similarly low rates. For these Introverted Prospecting types, cardio appears to be more of an occasional activity than a regular habit – a sharp contrast with the near-daily engagement seen among ENTJs and ESTJs.
Strength Training Frequency
Agreement with "About how often do you do strength training?"
| Personality type | Every day | Once per week | Once per month | Less than once per month |

| ISTJ (Logistician) | 20.33% | 33.79% | 10.44% | 35.44% |
| ISFJ (Defender) | 17.83% | 30.25% | 12.19% | 39.73% |
| ESTJ (Executive) | 30.33% | 40.98% | 9.84% | 18.85% |
| ESFJ (Consul) | 23.27% | 35.85% | 8.18% | 32.7% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 14.96% | 27.41% | 11.85% | 45.78% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 10.82% | 28.13% | 11.06% | 50% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 26% | 32% | 9.5% | 32.5% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 20.89% | 32.28% | 10.13% | 36.71% |
ENTJs dominated strength training even more decisively than cardio, with 38% lifting weights or doing resistance exercises daily and roughly 74% doing strength training at least once per week. ESTJs followed closely, while ENFJs trailed by a wider margin than they did for cardio. The Thinking trait appeared to offer a slight additional boost here – Thinking types generally outpaced their Feeling counterparts by a wider margin in strength training than in cardio.
The bottom of the list tells a striking story. Over 52% of INFPs said they do strength training less than once per month, and ISFPs reported similar numbers. The roughly 40-point gap between ENTJs and INFPs in weekly strength training is even larger than the already notable divide in cardio. For many Introverted, Prospecting personality types, strength training seems to be the form of exercise they are least likely to pursue with any regularity.
How Personality Shapes Exercise Motivation and Fitness Goals
Motivation is often the biggest barrier to regular exercise, and the results show that personality plays a central role in whether people can push past it. Across these five questions, Introverted Prospecting types consistently reported the highest rates of motivational struggle and the lowest self-perceived activity levels, while Extraverted Judging types expressed more confidence and consistent effort. Still, even the personality types that struggle most with motivation have not given up on their fitness goals.

INFPs reported the highest rate of motivational struggle, with 80% saying they often lack the motivation to exercise. INTPs were close behind at 78%. ISFPs and ISTPs showed similarly high rates, with both above 73%. All four of these types share the Introverted and Prospecting traits – a combination that tends to favor flexibility and inner exploration over rigid schedules. Without external goals or built-in accountability, these personality types may find it especially difficult to sustain a regular exercise habit.
ENTJs, by contrast, were the least likely to say they often lack the motivation to exercise, at just 37% – less than half the rate seen among INFPs. ESTJs and ENFJs were also among the least likely to report motivational difficulties. But the Extraverted trait alone doesn’t keep motivation high: 64% of ENFPs said they often lack exercise motivation, a rate closer to their Introverted peers than to Extraverted Judging personality types. This suggests that the Judging trait – with its emphasis on discipline and structured goals – may matter just as much as the Extraverted–Introverted divide when it comes to staying motivated.

ENTJs were the most likely to see themselves as more physically active than their friends, with 63% choosing that option. ESTPs came in at 61%. In general, Extraverted personality types were far more likely to view themselves as the more active person in their social circles – a pattern that likely reflects both their higher actual activity levels and a broader tendency toward confident self-assessment.
INTPs told a very different story: 42% said they are less active than their friends, and only about 26% said they are more active. INFPs showed a similar pattern. For these Introverted Prospecting personality types, social comparison seems to reinforce a sense of falling behind – which, combined with the motivational challenges discussed above, may create a cycle where low confidence about fitness makes it even harder to get started.

The encouraging news is that across every personality type, more people said they are more physically active than they were one year ago, rather than less. ENTJs led the way, with 58% reporting increased activity. ESTPs and ENFJs were not far behind, both above 53%. Even among the types at the lower end of this measure, the trend leaned positive – a sign that many respondents, regardless of personality type, are making progress.
That said, differences between types persisted. ISFPs were the least likely to report increased activity at 37%, and about 31% said they had become less active. INFPs and INTPs showed comparable patterns. ESTJs stood out for a different reason: they had the lowest rate of decreased activity at just 17%, suggesting that once these structured personality types commit to a fitness routine, they are especially unlikely to backslide.

When asked how they usually exercise, respondents across all personality types chose solo exercise most often – but the preference was especially pronounced among Introverts. INTJs topped the list, with 73% saying they usually exercise alone, and INFJs came in at 69%. Even Introverted types with moderate overall exercise rates, like ISFJs and ISTPs, strongly preferred working out alone when they did exercise. For these personalities, the solitude of a solo run or a home workout may be part of what makes exercise appealing in the first place.
Extraverted types were far more open to exercising with others. ESTPs reported the highest rate of social exercise, with 44% usually working out with other people, closely followed by ESFJs at 42%. Still, even among Extraverts, solo exercise was the more common choice – no personality type had a majority exercising with others. The data also showed that about one in five INFPs, INTPs, and ISFPs said they don’t exercise at all, a reminder that for some types, the biggest challenge isn’t choosing between solo and social workouts – it’s getting started.
Active Efforts to Improve Fitness
Agreement with "Are you actively trying to improve your physical fitness?"
| Personality type | Agreement |
|---|---|
| INTJ (Architect) | 77.12% |
| INTP (Logician) | 61.78% |
| ENTJ (Commander) | 90.18% |
| ENTP (Debater) | 79.05% |
| INFJ (Advocate) | 80.36% |
| INFP (Mediator) | 69.16% |
| ENFJ (Protagonist) | 87.73% |
| ENFP (Campaigner) | 76.33% |
| ISTJ (Logistician) | 72.88% |
| ISFJ (Defender) | 74.83% |
| ESTJ (Executive) | 82.93% |
| ESFJ (Consul) | 85.89% |
| ISTP (Virtuoso) | 64.84% |
| ISFP (Adventurer) | 65.41% |
| ESTP (Entrepreneur) | 77.89% |
| ESFP (Entertainer) | 76.83% |
Despite the motivational struggles many types reported, the desire to improve is widespread. ENTJs were the most likely to say they are actively trying to improve their physical fitness, at 90%. ENFJs (88%) and ESFJs (86%) also reported very high rates. Even the personality types that struggle most with motivation showed strong improvement aspirations, suggesting that wanting to be fitter and actually feeling motivated to exercise are two very different things.
INTPs reported the lowest rate of active improvement efforts at 62% – which is still a clear majority. ISTPs and ISFPs came in only slightly higher, around 65%. The roughly 28-point gap between ENTJs and INTPs here is meaningful, but it’s much smaller than the 43-point gap in the motivation question. In other words, even personality types that frequently lack exercise motivation are more likely than not to be trying to improve their fitness.
Building a Fitness Approach That Fits Your Personality
This survey paints a consistent picture: personality traits – especially the Extraverted vs. Introverted and Judging vs. Prospecting divides – shape how people engage with physical fitness in meaningful ways. From interest and exercise frequency to competitive sports and self-rated fitness, the same types appear at the top and bottom of nearly every metric. Extraverted Judging personality types, led by ENTJs, are the most active, the most structured, and the most confident about their fitness. Introverted Prospecting types, particularly INFPs and INTPs, consistently report the lowest engagement.
The most striking finding may be the sheer size of these gaps. In weekly exercise, motivation, and structured program participation alike, the most and least engaged personality types were separated by margins of more than 30 percentage points. Differences like these suggest that personality doesn’t merely nudge people in one direction or another. For some types, it fundamentally shapes whether physical activity feels like a natural extension of daily life or a constant uphill battle.
And yet, there is real reason for optimism. Across every personality type, more respondents reported becoming more active over the past year than less active. Even among the types that struggle most with motivation, a clear majority are working on it. The desire to get fitter is nearly universal – what varies is the path people take to get there. That gap between wanting to be active and actually following through may be one of the most relatable findings in the entire survey, and a reminder that personality shapes not only how we exercise but how we think about exercise itself.
