Personality snapshot

Warm, flexible, and more tuned in to the here and now than most – that’s the picture Japan’s respondents paint. They’re the most Feeling and the most Prospecting of all 108 ranked countries, so their decisions tend to start with people, and their plans stay open. Explorers are especially common: ESFPs (Entertainers) appear more than twice as often as in the average country, and ISFPs (Adventurers) are 77% more common. ENTJs (Commanders), by contrast, are less than half as common.

About the country

Japan stretches across thousands of islands in the northwestern Pacific, from snowy Hokkaido to the subtropical beaches of Okinawa. Mountains cover most of the land, and Mount Fuji, an active volcano, rises highest of all. The country’s Shinkansen bullet trains have carried passengers since 1964, and Japan gave the world instant noodles, the Walkman, and emoji. Its traditional cuisine, washoku, is recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
