About the country

Bulgaria lies on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, with the Danube along much of its northern border and the Black Sea to the east. The Rila Mountains hold Musala, the highest peak in the Balkans. In the Rose Valley near Kazanlak, growers pick roses for a large share of the world’s rose oil. A yogurt-making bacterium, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, is named after the country, and the Varna Necropolis held some of the oldest worked gold ever found.
