The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Personality Type

Laura's avatar

In her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, organizer Marie Kondo teaches us to get rid of anything in our homes that doesn’t “spark joy.” A #1 New York Times bestseller, her book has been read by millions of people worldwide. Now, Kondo’s Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is bringing her message to the small screen.

Thanks to Kondo, people around the world are talking about the best way to fold jeans and whether vacuum cleaners spark joy. With this in mind, we at 16Personalities asked ourselves how each personality type would react to the “KonMari” method. Here are our (tongue-in-cheek!) takes.

Analysts

Fun fact: Analyst personalities are split on the subject of clutter. Our research finds that Prospecting Analysts (Logicians and Debaters) are about 30% more likely to have cluttered homes than their Judging counterparts (Architects and Commanders).

Architect (INTJ)

[flipping furiously through Marie Kondo’s book]

“Joy? Who cares about joy? And what’s all this about magic? Why can’t someone write a book about the life-changing science of tidying up?”

Logician (INTP)

[rubbing hands together]

“I think I’ll start by getting rid of all those gifts you gave me that I didn’t ask for.”

Commander (ENTJ)

[surveying the horizon]

“Vanquish the clutter. Defeat the chaos. If something does not serve your purpose, banish it to the void.”

Debater (ENTP)

[rubbing chin thoughtfully]

“Why not try getting rid of everything that does bring you joy? Now that’s an experiment.”

Diplomats

Diplomats are the personality types with the most difficulty getting rid of things. Nearly 70% report that their home is “cluttered with all sorts of things.”

Advocate (INFJ)

[arms folded, eyes narrowed]

“My clutter has a purpose. It’s here to help humanity. What about your clutter?”

Mediator (INFP)

[blinking fast]

“Do you think my belongings ever look at me and ask themselves whether I spark joy?”

Protagonist (ENFJ)

[rubbing temples]

“I don’t take time to tidy my home. No, I have a nobler calling: I tidy other people’s homes.”

Campaigner (ENFP)

[spinning around, overwhelmed]

“But everything sparks joy!”

Sentinels

Fun fact: 75% of Sentinels prioritize having a tidy home. This places them among the tidiest personality types.

Logistician (ISTJ)

[shaking head sadly]

“What kind of adults don’t already know how to tidy up? People these days…”

Defender (ISFJ)

[surveying a pile of freshly laundered clothes]

“I was going to try the KonMari method, but I might not fold these socks exactly right, so… Better not risk it.”

Executive (ESTJ)

[tosses something onto your cluttered desk]

“Here, I bought you this book. Do what it says.”

Consul (ESFJ)

[singing along to Adele’s “Someone Like You”]

“I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited but… Could I come in and help you clean your closets?”

Explorers

Fun fact: Only 37% of Explorer personalities say that having a clean and tidy home is among their top priorities.

Virtuoso (ISTP)

[doing whatever they please]

“Do I have too much clutter? Hang on, don’t answer that – I don’t care what you think.”

Adventurer (ISFP)

[watches video about clearing clutter]

“Yes! This is exactly what I need to do!”

[arranges clutter beautifully, not discarding a single item]

Entrepreneur (ESTP)

[leaning one elbow on the table, à la the Most Interesting Man in the World]

“I don’t often tidy up. But when I do, it’s life-changing.”

Entertainer (ESFP)

[to several dozen close friends, via text message]

“About to try this tidying-up thing.”

[two minutes later]

“Who wants to meet up for pizza?”

For specifically I asked all my friends about spring cleaning their responses were something along the lines of: ENTJ: If something isn't being useful it doesn't belong in my house. Be useful or I shall banish the. ENFJ: My house? Nah, do you want some help with your spring cleaning? ESFP: *texts me* Ugggh *my name* I'm going to try to get rid of some of my clothes, I have way too many honestly. *ten minutes later* soooo what're you up to, do you want to go to that secodn hadn store on Piedmont Avanue?

Hilarious xD my room isn’t clean by any stretch of the imagination, however it’s not clutter. It’s my lack of resolution to put away my clothes…
