Mr. Darcy’s Personality Type Revealed

Laura's avatar

Now that we’ve revealed Elizabeth Bennet’s personality type, you might find yourself wondering: But what is Mr. Darcy’s personality type?

Well, fair reader, we at 16Personalities have been pondering that very question. After all, it’s the interplay between Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s personalities that makes Pride and Prejudice such a delight to read.

Mr. Darcy Personality Type

Our determination? Mr. Darcy is an example of the Assertive Logistician (ISTJ-A) personality type.

Here’s how we came to that conclusion.

Take the Test

Introverted (I)

Over the centuries, Mr. Darcy has earned a reputation as something of a heartthrob, but that doesn’t make him a social butterfly. He finds himself drained by the gatherings and grand balls that Elizabeth so enjoys, and conversing with strangers feels uncomfortable to him.

This doesn’t mean that Darcy is antisocial, however. In typical Introvert fashion, he simply reserves his social energy for the few people he allows into his inner circle, such as his friend Bingley and his sister Georgiana.

Observant (S)

Like many Observant personality types, Mr. Darcy is highly sensitive to tradition and social expectations. Whereas an Intuitive type might not worry about marrying below his “station,” Darcy is painfully aware that everyone in his life expects him to choose a wife whose social standing matches his.

In this vein, he also devotes himself to helping his friends and loved ones maintain their own reputations and propriety. This is why he initially advises his friend Bingley not to marry Jane, why he opposes his sister’s relationship with the fortune-hunting Mr. Wickham, and why he endeavors to restore the reputation of Elizabeth’s sister Lydia.

Thinking (T)

The first time Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, he says, “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

Hang on, you might be thinking, that sounds like a Feeling personality type!

But as Mr. Darcy reveals, he has been trying – in typical Thinking-type fashion – to reason his way out of his love for Elizabeth. In fact, he ends his proposal by explaining all of the rational reasons why he shouldn’t love her. (Needless to say, this doesn’t go over well.)

Judging (J)

One of the pleasures of reading Pride and Prejudice is seeing how Darcy and Elizabeth move beyond their initial (not-altogether-positive) impressions of each other. Both of these characters are Judging personalities, with firmly held opinions. In fact, early in the novel, Darcy boasts to Elizabeth, “My good opinion once lost is lost for ever.”

Fortunately, like many Judging types, Darcy and Elizabeth eventually discover that some opinions are meant to evolve and grow. This progression is why their love story continues to resonate with readers – even though we no longer attend balls or drive around in carriages.

Assertive (A)

Mr. Darcy rarely doubts himself. As we’ve discussed, his first proposal to Elizabeth is kind of a disaster. He tells her, for example, that he has found it “impossible to conquer” his love for her “in spite of all his endeavours.” He also insults her family and her social standing.

Despite these (rather obvious) missteps, Darcy seems totally confident that Elizabeth will accept his proposal: “she could easily see that he had no doubt of a favourable answer. He spoke of apprehension and anxiety, but his countenance expressed real security.” It’s only once Darcy recognizes that he must earn Elizabeth’s affections that he is successful in doing so.

Conclusions

For these reasons, we consider Mr. Darcy to be an Assertive Logistician. But what do you think, fair reader? Do you agree, or do you think that Mr. Darcy might be a different personality type? Let us know in the comments below!

Yes we love you Mr. Darcy!

I thoroughly believe him to be an INTJ-A. Throughout the book he portrayed that personality... I can’t see Mr.Darcy as any other personality

Their reasons for Mr. Darcy being Observant are really not very good... They say he is worried about his reputation. Then why is he such a stand-offish, accidentally impolite guy in public may I ask? They say he didn't want Jane to marry Mr. Bingley because it would ruin his reputation. But Mr. Darcy didn't want Jane to marry Bingley because he honestly thought Jane didn't love him and was in it for money. And he didn't want his sister Georgiana to marry Mr. Wickham because Wickham was a super immoral guy who was only in it for the money. The only reason he tried to restore Lydia's reputation was because he loved Elizabeth. But besides all that, he seems way more INTJ than ISTJ. He even has the fabled stare. (If anyone remembers Elizabeth noticing Mr. Darcy staring at her fixedly)

With regard to "standoffish"... If you look at the Logistician description, one of the weaknesses is "Insensitive – While not intentionally harsh, Logisticians often hurt more sensitive types’ feelings by the simple mantra that honesty is the best policy. Logistician personalities may take emotions into consideration, but really only so far as to determine the most effective way to say what needs to be said."
INFJ avatar
Most of his motivations are found in his sense of responsibility and loyalty which is a strength of Logisticians: "Very Responsible – Logisticians’ word is a promise, and a promise means everything. Logisticians would rather run themselves into the ground with extra days and lost sleep than fail to deliver the results they said they would. Loyalty is a strong sentiment for Logistician personalities, and they fulfill their duties to the people and organizations they’ve committed themselves to."

And, I think we can all agree that Mr. Darcy, while reserved, was dedicated to Elizabeth. From the Logisticians Romantic Relationships page: "While their reserved nature often makes dating Logisticians challenging, they are truly dedicated partners, willing to devote tremendous thought and energy to ensure stable and mutually satisfying relationships."
INTP avatar
I don't see Darcy being Observant either.
INTJ avatar
But actually Darcy, compare to Elizabeth, is much more conservative. INTJ is creative and people with this personality type are always having original ideas, somewhat a little rebellious. I have read the book many times and I agree with the article that Darcy is an ISTJ-A
ISTJ avatar
I think Mr.Darcy is an INTJ. When you read the strengths and weaknesses of the INTJ you get the image of Mr.Darcy. He’s arrogant, self confident, and a little bit clueless in romance.
ISTJ avatar
I’m ISTJ-A and I’ve been told I’m a lot like him.

Part 3: One thing I wanted to comment on the „he helps others maintain their reputation“ is this: Several types could care about that for several reasons. That‘s not necessarily an ISTJ thing. In short, every person with a strong sense of honor would do this. INFPs and ISFPs might do so for a sense of doing what‘s right and valor. ENFJs and ESFJs would do it in order to help others and feel needed. ESTJs would help because they can understand the wish to be well-liked. Even INTPs could, because they know how frustrating it is not to fit in and they don‘t want others to feel like that too. In short, this alone is not enough to conclude he is an INTJ. Darcy‘s way of speaking too betrays his INTJness. Example: when he says:“She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me.“ ST types wouldn’t usually say things like that (even when they think they‘re not being overheard), because they know that it sounds rude and goes against societal standards of politeness. His blunt honesty is not typical for an ISTJ.

I've actually read a section of a book that went over in great detail why the author (of that book) thought that Darcy is an INTJ. Reading through the examples they included, I was thoroughly convinced. And regarding 16P's reasoning behind thinking he's an S and as such an ISTJ with the reputation thing: ObServants are not the only ones concerned with reputation. Reputation can actually be very important to INTJ. Reputation does not equate to living up to societal norms and expectations or equate to caring about said things. And one of the examples this other book I read showed a scene where Darcy was pointedly giving a woman (can't remember her name) "leave me alone" curt responses while he was trying to read a book. ISTJ would probably feel tempted to do this, but might try their best to be courteous since it would be the "right" thing to do. As an INTJ, Darcy just didn't even care.
INFJ avatar
With regard to "As an INTJ, Darcy just didn't even care"... I'd argue against that greatly, myself. Darcy gave the outward appearance of not caring, but as we come to learn more about him throughout the book (and subsequent movies), he "cared" very much indeed. His actions indicated he was meticulous in his approach to protect his friends and those close to his inner circle. He was rather meticulous in rectifying any wrongs he believed to be perpetrated against others.

Blunt honesty is one of the defining qualities of an ISTJ, in my experience.
