Marie Kondo’s Personality Type Revealed! (And yes, it sparks joy.)

Laura's avatar

Let’s talk about Marie Kondo, the Japanese organization expert who’s convincing the world to tidy up.

Kondo’s philosophy is distinctive: she wants us to touch each item we own and see if it “sparks joy.” If it doesn’t, she encourages us to get rid of it. This simple but surprising advice has made Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, a worldwide bestseller. It’s also laid the groundwork for her popular Netflix series, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.

As you might notice, Kondo’s method is unconventional. It has nothing to do with how frequently we use an item, how much it’s worth, how much storage space we have, or any other criteria you might expect from an organization expert. If I touch my toppling stacks of dusty old yearbooks and they spark joy, then I have full permission to hold on to them for as long as I’d like.

(Spoiler: Those yearbooks didn’t spark joy. I’ve already gotten rid of them.)

So, you might wonder, what kind of person would come up with this unusual method – and convince the world to care about it?

Based on our research, we believe that Marie Kondo has a Turbulent Advocate (INFJ-T) personality type. Here’s why.

Take the Test

Introverted (I)

Marie Kondo has built her career around helping people create peaceful, pleasant homes that they enjoy retreating to. Like any Introverted personality type, she knows how soothing it is to have a home that keeps out the chaos of the world.

Intuitive (N)

Before she works on a client’s home, Kondo kneels, closes her eyes, and tunes into the energy of the house. This practice might seem strange or frivolous to Observant personality types, but Kondo’s belief that there’s more to this world (and to a house) than meets the eye is common among Intuitive personalities.

Feeling (F)

This might come as a surprise to those of you who haven’t read her book or watched her show, but Kondo believes that things have feelings. Where most of us would see a pile of stuff, Kondo sees a collection of items that deserve respect, gratitude, and care.

Here, for example, is her surprisingly considerate attitude toward clothing:

Feeling personality types attune themselves to other people’s emotional states. Kondo takes this trait a (sizable) step further by considering the feelings of things as well as people.

Judging (J)

Marie Kondo has built a multinational empire around a method for tidying. Need we say more?

All right, here’s more evidence that Kondo is a Judging personality type: she always wears variations of the same outfit, a full skirt and a slim-fitting cardigan or knit top with ballet flats. You won’t catch her experimenting with jumpsuits or jeggings or jeans or any of the other infinite things she could wear. Like many people with the Judging trait, she recognizes the value of making a decision and sticking with it.

Turbulent (-T)

In her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Kondo shares that, as an adolescent, she became so perfectionistic about tidying that she broke down and cried: “I don’t want to tidy anymore!” Turbulent personalities can relate to this relentless drive to get things exactly right.

Fortunately, Kondo found a way to focus on joy rather than perfection, and in doing so, she reclaimed her love of... well, tidying up.

Final Thoughts

Marie Kondo stands as an excellent example of a Turbulent Advocate. She reminds us that Introverts can have a global influence, Intuitive personality types can take action, Feeling types can share their ideas without shame, Judging types can be decisive without sacrificing creativity, and Turbulent types can find inspiration amid imperfection.

And what could spark more joy than that?

So, what do you think? Do you agree that Marie Kondo is a Turbulent Advocate, or do you think she’s a different personality type? How do you feel about her philosophy of tidying? Let us know in the comments below!

I think she's another type It seems like she's very optimistic and always happy and radiates joy As far as I know we infj tend to be on the dark side Unlike her we don't always have a smile on our face. She seems like a really nice person but maybe too nice and too happy to consider as an infj

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that... I would beg to differ, though. One of my good friends is an advocate, and he is one of the most cheerful and supportive people I know.

I don't think our personality type tends to be on the dark side. I'd rather say that we are well aware of the duality of all things. There's no light without darkness, so there's no point in acting like life is just a super sweet fairytale. But I still consider myself the most optimistic person I know.

I don't think that INFJs necessarily tend towards the dark side. I'm definitely a Turbulent Advocate Optimist :-)

Hello friend, I am sorry to hear that... you must be going through a dark time in your life. I just to remind you that there is always light in the end of a dark tunnel, and that you can definitely get through this. Additionally, since you are an INFJ, I know you have it in you to get through anything. Everything is always worth it the end. PS. I always try to smile, to the point where it is natural for me. Sometimes, negativity and darkness can actually yield benefits and is a medium for growth (which makes me an optimist I guess). So as long as you can keep your eyes on that light, you will always definitely get through that tunnel. A better, stronger and more beautiful you.

I agree with the dark side, but I would argue that most INFJ's don't necessarily show it. In fact, they probably spend a lot of the time trying to hide it. As intuitive introverts, it's very unlikely for them to project their feelings onto others, but rather try to provide others with peace, through friendliness and positivity, even if they lack it themselves internally.

Get out of my head lol

When we share a type, we have the super awesome ability to reach each other's minds. For we are like each other. Derp. I don't believe that INFJs are naturally dark. I think it has more to do with the -T/-A scale since it's related to resilience vs anxiety. Or positive vs negative thinking.

I agree with this. I have a bad habit of overcompensating with cheerfulness when I pick up sad/negative vibes. Unfortunately, it ends up draining me completely and I often get resentful for it. It's a challenge.

I like organising but I never have enough time!

This article sparks joy :D

I refuse to share INFJ-T personality type with this woman :D I can't be sure, but aren't we, INFJs, too practical to hug the carpet? Don't we hate superstition and cloudy philosophical statements? Wouldn't we do such things on live tv only for fun/joke? Wouldn't we hate being on live tv so often? I don't know... I talked to an INFJ friend about her and we both agreed there's something annoying about her, something we don't get.
INFJ avatar
Maybe her ideals? I don't know really. Advocates tend to be strong to their beliefs that they can sometimes create something negative (but not always).

Actually there’s two things that would be relevant to your comment. 1. Someone on this comment section mention about her being too nice and happy, which doesn’t hurt to be kind also happy all the time. 2. I remember watching a video YouTube of the reasons why people dislikes you, and being too kind/nice were one of the reasons why some people don’t like about others being too kind and happy. So I hope that clears that up your comment/response.

Agreed. I think she is an ENFJ--they are externally quite enthusiastic. I'm a teacher and function well as an extrovert, but there is something about her that makes me think her perceived introversion is really part of her Japanese culture. Needing to create a space to retreat to isn't enough criteria for introversion, in my opinion. She seems to get energy from all the people with whom she interacts.
INTJ avatar
I agree TBH

I'm INFJ-T and enjoy some level of spirituality for the science of what it does for the mind and body. I think thanking an object is a very symbolic way of letting go of what no longer serves you.

I would say that's all very accurate! She definitely seems like an advocate.
