If Your Personality Type Were a Holiday Cookie

Every holiday season, my mother would spend weeks in the kitchen making batch after batch of her signature Christmas cookies. These once-a-year treats went into carefully arranged trays, which she wrapped in cellophane with festive bows and gave to everyone who mattered to her.

Now, I’m carrying on the tradition with my own family. And one of my favorite parts of cookie baking is looking up new recipes.

I’ve found some great ones this year, and I want to share them with you.

But I can’t just give you a simple list of recipes. Oh, no. This is 16Personalities, after all. So – I’ve matched each recipe to the personality type it most embodies. Maybe you’ll discover that your type’s cookie perfectly captures who you are and becomes a new favorite in your holiday baking traditions.

Or maybe you’ll just get hungry reading this, and go look for a real cookie.

Either way – enjoy!

INTJ (Architect)

Twice-baked to perfection, Italian almond biscotti are rigidly structured cookies that perfectly embody the INTJ’s methodical approach to life. These cookies last for the long haul, maintaining their integrity for weeks.

The double-baking process mirrors this personality type’s love of systematic planning. Their compatibility with both coffee and sweet wine reflects the same versatility of the INTJ’s imaginative yet practical approach to life.

These cookies don’t need to be flashy. Their understated elegance and enduring quality speak for themselves.

INTP (Logician)

These honey cookies undergo a fascinating two-stage frying process that would intrigue any INTP.

The science behind the Korean yakgwa is complex. You must start with a low temperature, then high temperature, all while managing oil absorption to achieve the signature layers. Like INTPs, these cookies have depth that reveals itself gradually. You soak them in ginger-honey syrup for hours, allowing flavors to develop and intermingle in unexpected ways.

The “medicinal confection” designation appeals to the INTP’s appreciation for historical context and functional beauty.

ENTJ (Commander)

Bold, decisive, and unapologetically spiced, Swedish pepparkakor are the perfect holiday cookie for ENTJs.

These thin, crisp ginger snaps pack serious flavor. Cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and even black pepper create a complex, assertive taste profile. Just like people with this personality type, they make a strong first impression and leave a lasting impact.

Scandinavian bakers traditionally make these cookies by the hundreds, embodying efficient mass production without sacrificing quality. They’re direct, memorable, and exactly what they claim to be.

ENTP (Debater)

These walnut-honey cookies are perfectly suited to the ENTP’s love of mixing traditions and challenging expectations.

Greek melomakarona have a robust, complex flavor profile and a delightfully loose, rustic shape. Like ENTPs, nothing about them is too precious or rigid. Bakers soak them in honey syrup with orange and top them with crunchy walnuts for added texture, creating a sensory experience that keeps you thinking.

Each bite presents a new argument: sweet, spiced, citrusy, nutty.

INFJ (Advocate)

Japanese matcha butter cookies embody the INFJ’s unique blend of tradition and vision.

Matcha, with its deep cultural roots and mindful preparation, speaks to this personality type’s appreciation for meaning and authenticity. The vibrant green color and subtle, sophisticated flavor represent INFJs’ tendency to stand out, but with unassuming elegance.

Like INFJs, these cookies are intricate (often piped into beautiful shapes) yet approachable. When paired with tea, they inspire moments of calm contemplation.

INFP (Mediator)

Shaped like coins to symbolize prosperity, Chinese almond cookies carry wishes for good fortune, which perfectly aligns with the INFP’s idealistic nature.

These cookies are buttery, tender, and less sweet than typical cookies from the United States, reflecting the INFP’s preference for authenticity over excess. The almond on top serves as a gentle reminder of what’s within, much like how people with this personality type quietly embody their values.

Families traditionally share these cookies during Lunar New Year, which further reflects the INFP’s love of meaningful traditions and bringing people together.

ENFJ (Protagonist)

Also known as Mexican Wedding Cookies or snowballs, polvorones are generous, warm, and made for celebrations.

Just like ENFJs, these cookies are deeply associated with festive events and joyous occasions. You roll them in powdered sugar multiple times, dressing them to impress while they remain genuinely sweet inside.

The crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth texture also embodies the ENFJ’s gentle, dissolving warmth. They bring people together with an ease and softness that makes everyone feel welcome.

ENFP (Campaigner)

Bright, trendy, and endlessly customizable, French macarons are the ENFP’s perfect match.

These cookies come in every color imaginable. And you can fill them with countless flavors, like passion fruit, rose, salted caramel, matcha, or even lavender. Like ENFPs, macarons are sophisticated yet playful, impossible to ignore yet never demanding.

They’re finicky to make (requiring patience and precision) but the results are magical and worth sharing. And just like every conversation with an ENFP, each macaron is a tiny adventure.

ISTJ (Logistician)

German pfeffernüsse are traditional spice cookies that bakers have made the same way for generations, and there’s a reason for that – the recipe works.

Pfeffernüsse are sturdy and dependable. They also improve with age (they actually taste better after a few days). And like ISTJs, they’re practical and no-nonsense. These cookies don’t require fancy decorations or fussy techniques.

The blend of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger is carefully balanced and time-tested. You know what you’re going to get. They’re perfect for dunking in coffee or tea, making them both functional and satisfying.

ISFJ (Defender)

Tender, cream cheese-filled Polish kolaczki cookies are the ultimate expression of care and tradition.

ISFJs, like kolaczki, are all about comfort and preserving family traditions passed down through generations. The soft, delicate dough cradles sweet fillings (like apricot, raspberry, or poppy seed), protecting what’s precious inside. Kind of like how ISFJs nurture and protect those they love.

Making kolaczki is labor-intensive, requiring patience and attention to detail, which people with this personality type give willingly when it comes to taking care of others.

ESTJ (Executive)

Chinese walnut cookies mean business. They are structured, straightforward, and get to the point. You can see exactly what you’re getting. Like ESTJs, they follow a proven formula: butter, sugar, toasted sesame oil, walnuts, and sesame seeds sprinkled on top.

There’s no mystery, no hidden layers, just reliable, consistent quality.

Like almond cookies, families traditionally serve these during Lunar New Year. They align with the ESTJ’s appreciation for tradition, hard work, and tangible results that lead to prosperity.

ESFJ (Consul)

Austrian linzer cookies feature a buttery, almond-spiced dough filled with raspberry jam, creating a perfect balance of nutty and sweet. Like ESFJs, they’re all about bringing people together with warmth and hospitality. They’re elegant yet accessible, beautiful yet comforting.

The traditional cut-out window on top lets you peek at the jewel-toned jam inside, representing the ESFJ’s transparent, warm-hearted nature. And just like people with this personality type, they are festive, shareable, and sure to bring smiles.

ISTP (Virtuoso)

Japanese kinako cookies, made with roasted soybean flour, are efficient, understated, and surprisingly versatile.

These cookies have a warm, nutty flavor similar to peanut butter but without any actual peanuts. They’re practical and ingenious. And just like ISTPs, they’re low-maintenance. The dough doesn’t require chilling, and you can quickly roll it out and cut it into any shape needed.

They’re simple in the best way – good ingredients, no unnecessary steps, and reliably delicious.

ISFP (Adventurer)

A little spicy, a little sweet, and undeniably cozy, Mexican hojarascas are the ISFP’s holiday cookie.

These shortbread cookies are delicate, crumbly, and will literally melt in your mouth. They’re an experience best enjoyed in the moment, filling your home with incredible aromas of cinnamon and warmth as they bake.

They’re small, unassuming, and don’t demand attention. But once you try one, you’ll keep reaching for more.

ESTP (Entrepreneur)

Italian struffoli are deep-fried honey balls that are all about action and celebration. You have to roll tiny bits of dough, fry them until golden, then bind them together with warm honey into a festive mound. There’s nothing delicate about this process – it’s dynamic, tactile, and produces immediate, crowd-pleasing results.

Like ESTPs, they’re bold, fun, and the highlight of many a holiday party.

Topped with colorful sprinkles and often shaped into a wreath, struffoli bring energy and excitement to any gathering.

ESFP (Entertainer)

Bright, trendy, stylish, and absolutely show-stopping, Italian rainbow cookies were made for ESFPs.

These tri-color almond cakes (representing the Italian flag) feature layers of raspberry jam and a coating of chocolate. Each rainbow cookie is a tiny performance – a smooth surface, vibrant colors, and a burst of flavor when you bite through to discover all those layers.

Despite their delicate appearance, they’re surprisingly sturdy and travel well, making them perfect for sharing at parties.

Happy Holidays from Our Kitchen to Yours

The truth is, there’s no “right” cookie for your personality type – just like there’s no single way to celebrate the holidays.

Maybe you’ll try the cookie I paired with your type, or maybe you’ll get inspired and make them all. Either way, I hope your kitchen smells like cinnamon and your holidays feel like home.

Happy baking from all of us at 16Personalities.

I like how there is such an interesting community surrounding 16personalities, fostering individuality and community through the members' discovery of their personality, learning more about who they are, and collaborating towards introspective growth. Things like these posts, to me, are the very signs of hope in humanity. Though this website won't alleviate the suffering of the millions in distress, nor provide alms to the impoverished individuals and provide housing to the homeless, it brings people together, no matter how little so, and makes this world just a little more tolerable. I like the cookie chosen for this personality type, but I wonder if I really am deserving of a title as grand and awe inspiring as "The Architect."

And I wonder if I'm worthy of Sherlock Holmes as someone sharing my personality type with me alongside Albert Eistein… and then I remember that I am a tea addict, I can't stop playing violin, I have an unhealthy obsession with books and muder mysteries and I remember when I figured out what my friend had been doing over Christmas with her family by looking at a random candle in her house and then I realize… yeah me and Sherlock are twins. xD
