The Self-Promoting Entertainer

For an introductory look at self-promotion, please see our article “Everyday Self-Promotion and Personality Types.”

Entertainers (ESFP) likely have little trouble talking about themselves and the work that they do. If there is a challenge for people with this personality type, it’s that their vision for their life and work may be a bit vague. When trying to self-promote, it can be obvious if someone appears to be aimless. In some ways, you need to attach the value of what you’ve done in the past to what you’re interested in doing in the future. But if you have no realistic vision for the road ahead, that becomes difficult.

What They Have Going for Them

Entertainers’ outgoing nature has them constantly presenting their life in some form to other people. When applied to work, self-promotion is an extension of this. While Entertainer personalities are likely not opposed to a formal promotion strategy, they prefer a more organic means of showing the world what they are made of. Combining a self-marketing strategy and just being themselves is likely to be a potent form of self-promotion.

What Gets in Their Way

Entertainer personalities tend to live in the present. They may not have a vision for the future, which might hinder them from taking the idea of self-promotion seriously. Employee promotion is about future direction, ambition, and satisfaction. People engage in self-promotion hoping for a better life. But without a strong sense of tomorrow’s needs and wants, the motivation to self-promote may not be present.

Self-Promotion Tip

Entertainer, you may want to take a moment to think about your future. Or perhaps a life coach or job counselor could help you find a focus, if you feel that you should be more actively attempting to advance in your work life. Generally, you are self-promoting by being your gregarious self, but that approach can be a bit haphazard. What if you had a more precise goal to focus on and a strategic plan for getting yourself noticed? What would that ultimately mean for the quality of your life?

Self-Promotion Is Kind of Who They Are

Entertainers tend to be socially focused. Part of that involves sharing their unique and often stylish view of the world while getting to know other people. That’s a lot, but it might not be enough if you find yourself out to dinner with your boss. They’re going to be thinking about end results, and usually, in business, it takes plans to get to that end result. In other words, they want to know what you can do for them in the future to bring about effective outcomes. Don’t overly depend on your graciousness and charisma – although those qualities certainly don’t hurt. Have a direction in mind.
